Your Teacher – Lisa Laughbaum
What a crazy couple of years it’s been! After Covid hit, I was fortunate enough to move my entire music workshop online. My students and I have been meeting on Zoom and the progress they’ve made is quite noticeable. The new virtual lesson space helps students with their focus and allows us to play fun music games together. Using Zoom’s incredible whiteboard and sharing features, students practice notes and rhythms like never before and their music reading skills have increased greatly. Most importantly, they’re having fun. Possibly the most exciting development is the instant bio feedback my vocal students receive by being able to watch themselves as they sing. Online lessons are so rewarding, I decided to close Encinitas Music Workshop (featured above) and have built myself an engaging virtual online studio space instead.
A Little About Lisa…
Lisa Laughbaum has over 30 years of experience in Music Education. She is passionate about teaching voice, piano and music theory and has provided weekly lessons to many students in the Encinitas area for decades.
As a Piano Teacher…
Lisa has been teaching piano to children in the Encinitas area since 1990. She conceived of her semi-private piano program while she was the Enrichment Coordinator at Gifted Preschool in Encinitas. Today, Lisa offers both traditional and semi-private piano lessons online to students of all ages. Her fun and engaging techniques, worksheets and games make learning to read music a breeze. Students who learn to read the grand staff can move on to any instrument they choose.
Though Lisa encourages all her piano students to learn to read and write the language of music, some students aren’t as excited about mastering that skill and Lisa understands this mentality too. Her teaching style is flexible and geared towards each individual student’s needs and wants.
As a Vocal Coach…
A working actor and musician, Lisa understands the artist mentality and encourages her students with patience and caring. She enjoys auditioning and performing in local bands (when covid restrictions allow) and has her finger on the pulse of the music and musical theater industry. Her vocal coaching style and techniques center around breathing, listening, plus consonant and vowel placement. Online vocal lessons have a true silver lining: the bio feedback students experience by watching themselves has facilitated speedier growth and shorter plateaus, a real blessing to the singer that approaches practice seriously and works hard on their craft. Novice or professional, Lisa’s students find she can impart just the right knowledge and her excitement and belief in the learning process is truly contagious. Lisa believes that everyone, beginner and pro alike, has a voice to explore and foster!
As a Music Theory and Song Writing Coach…
A few of Lisa’s students are multi-talented singer/songwriters or musicians who want to understand what they are playing and why. These friends learn about the theory behind the music, practice playing common chord progressions, lead sheets, and acquire knowledge of other tricks of the trade such as modulation (also known as key changes) and familiar chord and rhythmic cadences. Most importantly, they learn the lingo used when playing with other educated musicians. With a BA in music from UCSD, Lisa loves to shed light on music theory and cherishes those lightbulb moments her students often experience under her tutelage.
